Unemployment taxes slam Businesses

CNNMoney.com- February 9, 2010

When lawmakers approved an increase in unemployment taxes a year ago, they didn't realize what the impact would be, said Rep. Dave Murzin, who heads the state's Economic Development & Community Affairs Policy Council. The state's unemployment rate was 7.6% at the end of 2008, versus 11.8% in December.

Now that lawmakers see the numbers, they are working to minimize the effect on businesses. The council plans to take up legislation this week that would restore the taxable wage base level to $7,000 and allow companies to pay the tax in installments over the next two years.<<< Read More...

ALERT!!!

Session is quickly approaching. During session Legislators, like myself, cannot raise funds for our campaigns. To counter act this disadvantage, my campaign for State Senate, District 2, is starting our “February Fundraising Fire Drill.” Until March 1st, we are collecting donations online. On March 1st, the Fire Drill will activate, giving us 24 hours to raise as much money as possible.

This is a grass roots effort. All donations are appreciated, no matter their size. We have set a goal of $10,000. I cannot thank everyone enough for donating money to my campaign. Please forward this information and spread the word to your family and friends.

Let the “February Fundraising Fire Drill" begin!

Dear Neighbor,

On August 24, 2010, you’ll be voting for your next state senator candidate in a primary election. Your current State Senator will be leaving due to term limits, and I am campaigning for that senate seat.  Senate District 2 includes all of Holmes and Washington counties, and parts of Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, and Bay counties.  Please allow me to introduce myself and let you know I am the true conservative in this senate campaign.  I am serving in my eighthand final year in the House of Representatives due to term limits.  I believe I possess the critically needed legislative experience and leadership skills to serve you well as your next state senator.

Experience:: I have a strong 11-year legislative record in the Florida House of Representatives.  My public service in the House began in 1998 as a Legislative Assistant to Jeff Miller, then serving in the Florida House.  After Jeff Miller was elected to the U.S. Congress, I served as Legislative Assistant to Jerry Maygarden, the House Majority Leader at the time.  In 2002, I was elected to the House of Representatives and subsequently reelected.   During my 7-year tenure in the House, my leadership skills and experience have been broadened and honed through service on several different councils and committees.  I now Chair the Economic Development and Community Affairs Policy Council—one of the House’s five (5) primary Councils.

Conservative Values:

    • I am a true blue conservative who believes our strength is in our families.
    • I believe in being guided by a strong and enduring sense of right and wrong and personal convictions about justice and honor.  Thus I believe that life begins at conception and I am against abortion.  I am against marriage between people of the same sex.
    • I believe our U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence define us as a Nation and are relevant to the present day.
    • I believe in limited government that represents the people and that maintains and protects a wide realm of liberty.
    • I believe in transparency in government and oppose the creation of more bureaucracy.
    • I believe in private property rights and in creating opportunities and empowering people, not government.
    • I believe in free markets and in the spirit of entrepreneurship.  I believe we should be able to pursue happiness unencumbered by over-taxation, over-regulation, or by debilitating government handouts.
    • I believe that the Second Amendment of our Constitution is a cornerstone of our democracy and that the right to bear arms is a constitutionally-protected right.  I have been a member of the NRA for over 25 years and have been an A+ rated member in the Florida Legislature.

My family and I have lived in Northwest Florida since 1978.  I graduated from Tate High School, Pensacola Junior College, and from the University of West Florida where I earned a B.S. in Political Science with a minor in Economics.  Prior to serving in the House, I participated in several professional development programs including Leadership Pensacola, Toastmasters, and Junior Achievement.

Thank you!  I appreciate your taking the time to visit my website.  I hope you will agree that I am a highly experienced and qualified candidate worthy of your vote.
